1917 Colt .45 Ammo Question
2 Attachment(s)
Picked up a 1917 Colt U.S. Army Revolver not long ago.
(Why?...Cause it was there and I didn't have a .45) This is a really tight piece and timing and lock-up seems perfect. Bore is shiny and sharp. Now, I'm not sure what would be the best defensive ammo for it. Bought this as a shooter since I'm not a collector. Will probably use the moon clips (2 loaded full rd clips will fit into a speed loader carrier) which will mean that I can use ACP rather than the expensive Auto Rim and carry 30 rds in 2 carriers plus those in the piece...make sense or no? Would appreciate any advice/suggestions on a good defensive load. TIA |

Thanks MicK,
I was kinda thinkin' about the Hornady. Appreciate your help (I used the search feature on here but it doesn't seem to be working) |
Re: 1917 Colt .45 Ammo Question
You sure that's not supposed to shoot the 45 LC instead???

Re: 1917 Colt .45 Ammo Question
I think some, perhaps S&W, were chambered for the Long Colt.
As I understand it, some folks bored out the chambers so that the Long Colt would fit but that's not a good idea from what I've read. There's also the "New Service" model... It gets kinda complicated. Mine is definitely an ACP, but won't extract w/o the moon clips...unless one punches them out individually. I could use the wider rim "Auto Rim", but they're just too expensive |

Re: 1917 Colt .45 Ammo Question
My Search Engine just isn't finding these.
Anyone have any ideas. I'm converting FRN's to ammo and Nickels...ASAP... (Among other things) |

Re: 1917 Colt .45 Ammo Question
Just about any 45 acp is gonna get the job done - its a 45 !!!
I would try a variety of ammo to see what your gun shoots well. Unfortunately accuracy results may not meet expectations with these old war horses depending on the ammo used. I have a 95% example that only shoots 6" groups at 10-15yds - although I haven't tried a lot of variety in it... no ragged holes here. Now my modern 625 is a different story. Auto-rim cases are available but you really have to look for them and be a reloader, moon clips really are the way to go. |
Re: 1917 Colt .45 Ammo Question
Thanks CyberGold,
I don't really know much about these pieces. Like I said, It was there, the guy needed the money... and I didn't have a .45 so I bought it. Was made in 1943 I was later told by the folks at Colt. My thinkin' was that I could use it as a house gun or something to have stashed/hidden away or carry at the farm. I haven't even fired it , or any .45 for that matter, since I was in the service. Any thoughts on the best all-round .45, either revolver or semi-auto? I know this is a very subjective question, but I'd be interested in starting and watchin' a good verbal fight/debate , Thanks for your obsevation(s) and thoughts |

Can't answer the ammunition question, but that is a good looking revolver!
Take care, Mod1 |
Re: 1917 Colt .45 Ammo Question
My recommendation would be Cor Bon DPX, it is the only carry ammo I use. I have fired or participated in the firing of literally thousands of rounds of ammo in testing and Cor Bon is the most consistent in penetration, penetration through barriers, and expansion.

I'll sure give them a try. Glad you found this thread. Sounds like you may have saved me a few bucks already ! I don't have to re-invent the wheel. 1000's of rounds of hands-on testing sure speaks volumes! One thing about this cannon is that if ya run outta boolits ya still have a pretty good club.:ok: |
Re: 1917 Colt .45 Ammo Question
Don't get me wrong...the others that folks have mentioned are good, I just think Cor Bon has a bit of an edge. DPX is loaded with the excellent Barnes monolithic hollow point, it contains zero lead. The copper alloy used along with the cavity design keeps the bullet in it's original state until it encounters a fluid medium which then causes expansion utilizing hydrostatic pressure. We fired it through 2 layers of 16 gauge steel seperated by 4 inches of air to simulate a car door. Penetration was minus about 10% but the bullet expended as normal. As an addition there were two small metal discs creating separate wound channels in the gelatin. Almost all other HPs tested tended to collapse when going through the steel and behaved like ball.
Will all shots have to be made through barriers? Of course not but I am happy knowing how my ammo will perform if it has to. There are no magic bullets, you have to hit to be effective. But given the cost of any premium ammo I would rather use Cor Bon...I simply trust it the most. |
Re: 1917 Colt .45 Ammo Question
Stay away from Corbon in this gun.
Every Corbon load requires a gun rated for +P by SAAMI....you gun is not. Just get some standard pressure....not +P.....JHP by just about anyone....that is all you need. Heck, a standard military hardball 230 grain FMJ will get the job done. Folks need to be cautious of where they use Corbon ammo - they even have ammo beyond +P SAAMI.....this can be very dangerous....you are now an experimental pilot.... |
Re: 1917 Colt .45 Ammo Question
Thanks Guys,
Think I'll try to pick up a 1911 or perhaps the 625(?) for my .45 I know of a guy over in Tn who can shoot the head off a rattlesnake at 25 paces ...over his left shoulder... and using a mirror to do it...with 1911 !! I remember seeing the picture right here on this board !!:emotions16: |
